a description of a temp. job being offered by the Federation
of Workplace Democracies-Minnesota (FWD-MN). Please

The applicant must have a clear understanding of the the function,
benefits and structures of worker co-operatives along with the
ability to access and engage campus groups and students. The
applicant must be self-motivated and work strictly within the
budget of the project.
The project involves:
1) Collaboration
with existing cooperatives on campus (student housing coops).
Presenting
as part of an existing series or events sponsored by the student
housing coops.
2) Sweatfree
campaigns and Fair Trade groups
Panel discussion
for student groups, related to the role of cooperatives within
the Fair Trade movement.
3) Artist
and artisan cooperatives
Panel discussion
of the potential of students to form arts cooperatives, based
on existing models of organizations in the Twin Cities.
4) Green
party – cooperative public policy
Series
of discussion and working groups to create opportunities for
local politicians to advocate for sound cooperative development
policies. These discussions would be based on the UK Cooperative
Party platform.
Budget:
$825 total
$200 for
four (4) programs directed at student groups
$25 for
writing the report of activity
Hourly rate:
$12.50
Timeline:
Start ASAP,
after FWD-MN board approves, or amends the workplan.
End June
30, 2007, including summary of report on grant activity.
Recommendation
for staff:
The worker
is a general coordinator of programs. S/he would recruit others
to assist with individual programs. The worker would report
to the FWD-MN board at the beginning and end of the timeline,
or individual board members as necessary.
Since the budget is very limited, use of funds for administrative
purposes (like meetings) should be kept to a minimum
The
Hub Bike Co-op.
The Hub
is a worker-owned, full service bike shop with 2 locations in
Minneapolis. We are looking for apprentices and experienced
bike shop workers for the 2007 season. We seek individuals who
are enthusiastic about our mission and want to be part of a
growing cooperative business.
All applicants
should possess the following qualities:
- Interest
in bike repair and cycling as transportation
- Self-motivated
- Interest
in cooperative practices
- Able
to work with diverse populations and be respectful and welcoming
to customers
- Willing
to communicate problems/concerns with co-workers
- Willing
to commit to one season full time (32+ hours/week), with potential
to work off season
- Able
to work independently and productively with little supervision
- Spanish
speakers desired
Additionally,
experienced bike workers should be comfortable doing new bike
builds and have shop experience in either mechanics or sales.
Experienced workers start at $9-$10/hour. We will take applications
for experienced shop workers on a rolling basis and begin hiring
in February.
The Hub’s
apprentice program aims to meet our goal to have a balanced
staff that reflects our community, and to create opportunities
for employment within the community. Apprentices will receive
training in basic bike repair, as well as in bike parts, tools,
accessories, and new and used bikes. Apprentices can expect
to spend their first season at the Hub primarily working sales
and bike build shifts, as well as participating in committees.
Apprentices will be hired in mid February and start at $8/hour.
All apprentice applications are due February 9th.
